To the Sedera Team and Community,
When sitting down to write my end of year reflections, two words came to my mind almost immediately: strength and persistence.
Let me tell you why.
2020 flipped the world upside down, and in one way or another, it changed every one of us. It also changed the healthcare industry forever. As the cliche goes necessity is the mother of invention. We witnessed a digital health boom (especially the capitalization and expansion of telemedicine). We had a front-row seat to the wonders of modern medicine and the rapid development of two historic COVID-19 vaccines. But we were also exposed to the fragility and cracks in our healthcare system under stress. We saw the problems with our healthcare system on the front page of international newspapers every day. For the first time, we all saw the risk of full emergency and ICU rooms. For the first time, we saw masses of people meet a doctor through a screen when they needed personal in-person connection. And for the first time, we saw millions of people lose their health insurance when they lost their jobs. Unfortunately, the list goes on and on.
But if this has taught us anything, it’s that — as humans— we have the strength to adapt and change. We have the strength to evolve and find ways to meet big problems with big solutions. And more than anything, we are persistent big thinkers who are eager to take on the unimaginable, despite whatever stands in our way. This year proved that.
For Sedera, 2020 was about harnessing our collective strength and persistence to build and create during one of the toughest years on record. Over the past 12 months, we’ve laid the foundation and built the infrastructure needed to propel our Community to the next level. Perhaps most importantly, our values served as the glue to help us through this time, and it manifested through our actions. We kept ourselves rooted in love and kept showing up with a ruthless certainty that the Community we’re building, one full of health champions, is on its way to creating a true world-changing approach to the healthcare that is so desperately needed.
Over the course of 2020, our incredibly talented team created a fintech-based Member-to-Member Medical Cost Sharing platform that is the very first of its kind. We worked alongside legislators and policymakers, advocating for our vision. Our Finance team kept a steady hand in the midst of economic instability. Our Sales and Member Services teams provided expert guidance during long periods of uncertainty and doubt. Our Needs Coordinators kept honoring the unique healthcare journey of every single Member. Our Community grew to 30,000+ Members, and we were grateful and fortunate not to make any pandemic-related lay-offs.
And we stood by each other when things got hard.
As many of you know, I’m a trained pianist. Musicians use a device called a metronome that produces a steady tick to set the tempo for a piece of music. It can be sped up or slowed down as needed. For me, this tool often represents security and consistency. This year, I found guidance in the predictable metronome-like beat of our plan in an ever-changing, chaotic world. But as an intention for the new year, we are speeding up the tick and therefore the tempo. There is so much work to do. There are so many people who need a solution to the greatest public policy issue facing our country today. Our steady and unwavering work has propelled us into a state of rhythmic motivation to build a better future for healthcare. In 2021, after a year of building up our foundational skills and capabilities, let’s crank up the beat. Let’s see our strength and persistence rewarded.
Our word for 2021 is growth. This year, we were blessed to be one of the fastest-growing private companies in America. We grew our team, our affiliate base, our DPC partnerships, and our Community Membership during an intense economic downturn — adding pivotal team members who shared our motivation to persist despite everything standing in our way. In perfect timing, Inc. ran a feature article today that sums up how Sedera made this happen. Upending the status quo is no easy task, but if any group can do it — it is this Community.
Let’s use this strength and persistence to go bigger and be better for one another.
We’re ready. We’re going into the next year in high gear.
Thank you for everything.
